Happy new year!! / Feliz ano novo!!

Next year is going to be difficult, hard, terrible, they say...
Prophets of doom were never good gardeners: Do not let them put their seeds in the plot of your expectations.
I wish everyone a happy and positive 2009!

A charming cottage near a railway / Uma bela casa junto à linha

Half timbered houses have a charm of their own, and are my favorites among all the traditional Portuguese architecture. A simple whitewash makes a splendid combination with a bright color in the timber frame, doors and windows, and the house itself also combines greatly with a curvy section of one of the many narrow-gauge railways, now mostly gone, that used to cross the Northern countryside.

The granary over the path / O espigueiro sobre o caminho

In the northern Portugal, few are the villages and farms where it isn't possible to find one of these typical granaries, the "espigueiros" or "canastros", as they are known, built in materials and sizes that differ from region to region. More difficult to find, although existing, is one that may stay in this way over a path...

At the shop's entrance / À porta da loja

Which other place could be best located to enjoy a chat under the last sunshine in an Autumnal afternoon, but the entrance of the shop in the centre of the village, where everybody meets everybody?

The town centre / O centro da vila

This scene could take place in any of the several small towns in my country, especially in the North and Centre. In front of the church there may be a small square with a garden and bandstand, and it's almost sure that the Town Hall will be in its opposite side. With this or any other arrangement, this is a somewhat utopian image anyway, because there isn't a single car in sight, as well as any TV antenna or the inevitable twelve-storey skyscraper, the proud of a local contractor...

Pruning the vines / Podando as vinhas

It's time to prune the vines, and little by little they appear prepared for another year of fine foliage, fresh shades and juicy grapes. Though a different setting, an old friend inspired this work: He never fails this task, which he does with surprising speed and precision, despite his more than 80 years of age ...

...And we're back to the beautiful Minho landscapes... An imaginary Minho, I must say, made of memories and impressions. But I'm sure that I must have passed by some peaceful place like this, since there is no lack of roads in which these villages appear by their side, their slow paced life unnoticed by those who pass there in a rush.

Everybody knows each other in the countryside villages, and the smallest of happenings always gives a good excuse for a few instants of chat between neighbours. Which subject may have claimed the attention of this trio and even some of their animals, in a village somewhere in Douro?

Morning in Minho / Manhã no Minho

In the top north-western Portugal, Minho has a reputation of being the greenest and most cheerful of all its provinces. Although in actual days many of its landscapes have been spoiled by excessive and unplanned building, especially around major towns and cities, some places exist that still make justice to that reputation, their contemplation being a total joy by early morning.

The smoky chimney / A chaminé fumarenta

In this cold and often wet season, the vision of a smoky chimney inspires a certain comfort for its suggestion of warmth and intimacy, as few things are better than sitting near the fire while the elements are raging outdoors. In this old granite house, similar to those that can be found in the Penafiel / Marco / Amarante region, an antique kitchen can be guessed, where an old cooker not so different from this one shown before may warm body and soul.

The house near the bridge / A casa junto à ponte

Nothing can be more picturesque in some traditional old houses than its timber-framed extensions, especially when coated with slate, acquiring the typical "fish scale" effect...
The region of Douro is one of the places where such structures can be widely seen. Unfortunately, this art of building is almost extincted, many of these being replaced by concrete imitations at the time of their supposed restoration.
P.S. - Thank you, Rafael, for your post about this work in Arquitectura D'Ouro

I've been tagged!! / Fui marcado!!

I've been surprised this afternoon by Mineke Reiders, as I've been tagged by her. It is the first time I'm involved in this king of blogging game, and I'm happy that it came from one of my favorite watercolor artists, which blog I never miss to visit and recommend.
The rules are:
1 - Link to the person who tagged you.
2 - Tag seven fellow bloggers and leave a comment on their blogs to tell them about it.
3 - Tell seven things interesting or unusual about yourself.

- First rule is done.
- Second rule will have to be skipped this time, since this blog is a newborn and still don't have but a few reciprocal links, some of them already tagged by Mineke.
- Third rule, seven things about me: a) I'm terribly shy; b) I'm married to a Japanese woman; c) I'm terrified about spiders, and yet there are plenty in my work space; d) I have a bad temper; e) I'm left-handed; f) I'm very forgetful, but have an excellent memory for useless things; g) I absolutely love cats, and we have three of them at home.

Thank you Mineke. I hope to be re-tagged in the future, and also be able to tag a few fellow bloggers!!!

Grilled sardines / Sardinhas assadas

There's no other snack more Portuguese than the fine sardines grilled in coal embers, with its company of peppers, bread and wine, and not even a small and remote north-eastern village is distant enough that their unmistakable flavour may not be occasionaly scented, making a good excuse for an outdoor meal at the end of the day.

I've been falling in love with the small mountain villages of northern Portugal, especially in the north-western Minho. It's been hard to resist any chance to run into them, especially now that some of the nicest are only a 90min. drive from home. The one we can see in the picture, as old as can be stated by the ruins of an ancient castle and which name is the title of this post, is ficticious as usual, but will give an idea of the beauty that can be found there, even if the sky is heavy, highlighting the gray tones of the granite.
Tenho vindo a apaixonar-me pelas aldeias de montanha do norte do País, especialmente no Alto Minho.

Playing at the river / Brincando no rio

Few places are as attractive for the childhood games as the ones near a river, where's no lack of hidden corners and promises of a thousand adventures. May call themselves happy those who can keep in their memories plenty of hours spent this way, in a freedom hard to find again as life goes by.

A manor house / Uma casa solarenga

In the northern Portugal, it isn't rare that these manor houses, which we are used to imagine as a huge baroque building, include sometimes a primitive medieval tower, as a reminder of the ancestry of the owning families. In this case, seen from a backyard patio, an enclosed upper gallery connects the two distinct bodies, like a bridge between generations.

Dog and cat / Cão e gato

These mountain villages have no lack of space for dogs and cats to get around in their own territories without meeting, but it happens sometimes... Fortunately without consequences.
For this work I used a waterbrush for the first time. This kind of compact self-watering brushes is ideal for outdoor sketchers, but I used it at home as usual and boy, I had the greatest fun! I finished this painting in about no more than 3 hours...

A curve in the road / Uma curva na estrada

Such a curve in the road had to be inspired in Minho, being the kind of spots that are for me the most pleasant to find in that always green province in the north-western Portugal. Add an elegant 19th century house with its farm and windmill to the bright colors and light that are typical of that region, and the joy will be complete!

The castle-shaped belvedere / O mirante acastelado

Belvederes and other follies were always part of these mansions built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, by Portuguese emmigrants returned from Brazil that could by this way demonstrate their wealth after many years of hard labour. Many of these "Casas de Brasileiros", or "Brazilianmen's houses" still can be found in Porto and Braga districts, and elsewhere, many of them abandoned or ruined.
Mirantes e outras extravagâncias faziam sempre parte destes casarões construídos nos finais do séc. XIX e início do séc.

The passenger of the trolley / O passageiro do eléctrico

Trolleys - or trams, if you're reading this in England - are one of my favourite subjects and I'll be back to them in future works. This one was inspired by a time in which they used to run across many streets of Porto and surroundings. Fortunately it is still possible to revive those memories in the heritage lines at the city centre and riverside.
We can't tell if the solitary pedestrian that returns home in a sunny Sunday afternoon really came out of the trolley, as he seems too far, but the title of this work goes well with him.

As someone who loves tiny houses, I couldn't resist to paint this peaceful scene. Little chalets like this, every day more hard to find, well deserve to be called "casa da avó", "grandma's house"...
I would like to take the chance to thank my friend and fellow painter Villager for his post about this still very young space in his blog Aguarelas Portuguesas, “Portuguese Watercolors”. For a long time I'm an admirer of the lightness, cheerful color and brightness in his works, both in this and his other blog Colliervisions, whose visits I strongly recommend.

An outskirt/Um arrabalde

Observing some outskirts of Porto, it's hard to imagine those same places some forty years ago, when traffic was scarce, houses were mostly tiny and colorful with primorous yards, and one could catch the trolley to downtown and other destinations. The trolleys are now gone, and apartment buildings have been taking the place of the houses.
