Wet days / Dias molhados

This work is so far one of my favorites... With it I take the chance to celebrate the arrival of Autumn and anticipate some of the beautiful images that will – if not already is - to provide. After a Summer full with sun and light, at least here in Northern Portugal, it is time to rediscover the beauty of the landscapes when touched by the rain that will be back sooner or later, giving them a different beauty and, because the horizons are "washed", definitely more clear and enlivened in colors.

I do not know how many times has been written here about the inexhaustible source of enchantment that are these corners near a river ... Bridges, houses, mills, water and its music are ingredients with which the nicest of places can be composed, and a lifetime can go without painting anything else. It will not be the case here, but this is certainly a topic to be revisited till satiation.

Village in a high place / Aldeia num sítio alto

This was one of those quick works, with no worries on accuracy or detail, that I like to do sometimes only to relax, just to play around with the light and shadow ... Could call it a "study" - always sounds good - but perhaps "fun" is the more appropriate term. Or maybe a little of both, since you always learn something with these "studamusements".

Harvest in the street / Vindimando na rua

By this time grapes are diligently harvested everywhere, both in large extensions of the biggest farms as well as the most humble of yards. These beautiful villages of Alto Minho, where vineyards cover many of its streets, should not be an exception. As I always passed there at different times of the year, especially in winter when the vines are reduced to their sinuous trunks, never remembered to ask who owns and who is supposed to do such work, since they are in a common area ...

A narrow house / Uma casa estreita

A nice house, airy and pleasant, giving a picturesque touch to the corner of any village... A true endangered species and, above all, with an elegant narrowness that fits perfectly on a 5"x7" sheet of watercolor paper: I think whoever built it knew that decades later an obscure painter of watercolors would want to portray it... Of course I'm joking, this house never existed.

Among the many old farmhouses, more or less noble that still exist throughout the country, giving the landscape a peculiar charm and often welcoming guests to a unique experience, the name "Quinta da Torre" - "Tower Farm" - should be common to a few where there is a prominent architectural body, often an old medieval tower ... It is not the case with this one, more recent, which we see dominating the skyline with a certain grandeur, but it doesn't make it less interesting: It may not be the oldest of the "Tower Farms", but it is certainly the most imaginary .

Five for lunch / Cinco para o almoço

A typical neighborhood made of small houses, where the streets are an extension of the rooms ... Not all rooms offer the privilege of the sun's heat, though restricted to the days when it brightly shows. For the four-legged creatures that wander around here, this also seems to be, at a more or less certain hour, a dining room.

The house / A casa

"The house" ... A simple title for the simpliest of works, based on a long-standing sketch, one of those who gets left behind, but retained in the desire of sooner or later become a watercolor. A simple house in a street surrounded by beautiful views, in a sunny afternoon, quiet and without a soul to be seen, as it gets too hot by this time.
"A casa"...

Little squares in small towns / Pequenos largos em pequenas vilas

Everything looks small in a little square in a small town ... The houses, the street, the businesses that still resist, even the people. In fact, everything just happens there a little more on our own scale, and maybe that's why the little squares of small towns, as well as other similar "littlenesses", can bring that comfortable feeling of wellbeing. Maybe actually they're not so small, it's the times we're living that stole from us the sense of proportions.

Looking at the fishes / A olhar para os peixes

I have special fondness for old houses at the waterfront and the one we see here was inspired by some real examples: A delicious blend of porches, additions, and corners in a variety of techniques and materials: Granite, wood, whitewashed nogging or coated with metal sheet, everything seeming to want to rush into the water despite its proven strength ... Part of the charm of vernacular architecture, the most beautiful and human of all architectures, has to do with what we are also should defend and appreciate in Nature: Diversity.

Uptown to downtown / Da alta para a baixa

Here, in the highest neighborhood of a small town, the most humble of homes have privileges of a guardian castle, and those who inhabit it are presented with luxury views. And if the familiar environment and a good conviviality of many years weren't enough, I suppose that no one can also complain of ill health - although this may certainly be the preferred “sport” in conversations between neighbors - after climbing all the stairs needed to reach there.

The simple entrance of a beautiful mountain village in something of a fresh morning of a Summer drawing to an end...
After a hot, festive and lively August with the presence on vacation of family emigranted in other countries, the calm days are back, as well as the usual tasks and conversations.

The house of the rooster / A casa do galo

Looking to the roof, we can see why this house is locally known as the "house of the rooster." Apart from this feature, it's just a nice half-timbered house coated with metal sheet, one of the few still resisitng from this beautiful art of building nearly extincted. Small but sufficient for the needs, surrounded by a nice yard and the best views ... What else can a person need?
