Today's sketch / O esboço do dia - 155

Inspired by the countryside that surrounds the city I live... Some big farmhouses are still active there. A long time passed since last time I got myself lost in those roads not far from home where some nice landscapes still can be found.

Today's sketch / O esboço do dia - 154

Everytime I paint a large cobblestone surface I say to myself this will be my last... And then another one seems to be on the way :))
Pois. Parece que já vem outra a caminho :))

A simple gray house / Uma simples casa cinzenta

This work might almost be considered "minimalist" when compared to those that normally appear here, since doesn't abound the usual profusion of details transformed into an irresistible impulse by the fear of vaccum of the one who paints them... We shall consider it a kind of "purge", and maybe a direction to take once in a while, if it is meant to be. The scene could take place in any quiet street of any town in northern or even central Portugal, with the difference that in many cases the elegant protagonist might have already disappeared to make way for one of those uncharacteristic concrete boxes that from the 70's on brought ugliness to so many locations. And while the gray doesn't go so bad in the facade of the image, the same cannot be said for many of those heavy successors.

A couple in their courtyard / Um casal no seu quintal

Backyards, courtyards, patios: They can be found in the most remote villages as well as in the city surroundings still with rural touches, as appears to be the case of the picture. Or even within its limits, hiding behind an old facade, the pedestrians unaware of the presence of these worlds of vegetables, pots, irrigation tanks, fruit trees, the inevitable vines on the trellis, the wandering animals... We keep coming back to them, so one might almost say it is always the same thing, but in reality it isn't so: Almost all are prior to formatted housing, so none is equal to another.

An anonymous and pleasant corner on the edge of a road. The red post box on the wall of the second house from the right indicates an old establishment where thirst can be killed among other businesses. Add the front yard, the presence of the tree, and here's a place where local people meet in greater or lesser number depending on the circumstances. It is possible that this may happen for several generations, it is possible that in certain Saturdays or Sundays they still play the “malha” or other endangered popular activity, it is possible that there are still places like this here and there. About the tree, who's able to identify it? This one “came out” like this, as an indication of the long path I still have when it comes to draw and paint trees from memory, starting with making them identifiable...

In my country, trees can provide us with the most delightful places when they're not mistreated or simply destroyed. No many delightful places remain.

The quiet Church Street / A pacata Rua da Igreja

Where is this thoughtful gentleman in the foreground looking at? Perhaps he's a "yard peeper”, an activity full of interest and conducive to the most curious and fascinating little discoveries, as can be said by the vast experience of this avid practitioner that writes to you. Or perhaps he simply left himself catch by the slight melancholy of a gray afternoon in a quiet town where apparently - but only apparently - nothing happens ...

House, mill and valley / Casa, moinho e vale

Here we have the whole set of "ingredients" to make up what one can call a beautiful place: A valley surrounded by mountains, green fields, a river running between rocks, a simple house and mill near the rough stone bridge. It feels like lying down and enjoy the warm heat of the Winter sun on all this grass, so much green and succulent - at least that's what the cows say - than its boring urban relative, mowed to the millimeter. Sweet and nice thoughts... It is curious that the places like this always bring them to the "outside" viewer, when it appears that real live around there may not be at all easy.

Two neighbors in a chat / Dois vizinhos à conversa

I do not know what are these two neighbors speaking about... When there is a nearby yard, and one of the two partners is working on it, certainly there's no lack of subject, because a yard where something is grown is like a small, productive country full of tiny "provinces", each with its own identity . Following this thought tell me, dear reader and visitor, would you not have ever dreamed of being the "prime minister" of a nation like that? Seeing how I see a few yards from the real world shattered and covered with cement, I am sure that you would function better in the job than a few... Damn, but what does all this reminds me of?

A colorful amalgamation / Uma amálgama colorida

I must confess my fascination for these colorful amalgamations of old buildings, as still can be found in some cities and towns, yet it is true that life no longer pulses in many, or at least a life happy and carefree, privilege of fictional places, as can be seen here. I like the mix and variety of materials, colors and shapes, in a final result in which everything matches and comes into place. Diversity is a valuable asset which existence we realize fewer in these days when everything goes formatting, standardizing, regulating and “graying”, including our heads if we are too distracted...

Nice views and fine air / Boas vistas e belos ares

Splendid views, clean air ... Luxuries almost forgotten but priceless, as already stated in the sketch that led to this work: A whole afternoon jacuzzying in the most luxurious of city terraces will lose out for the ten seconds that Mrs. Natércia takes to shake the dust cloth. The only thing that makes me confused is how it was possible for someone to remember building a church turning its back on such great wonders. It seems to me for sure that the reason is that it came from the brush tip of a wind-headed “architect"...

Half band waiting / Meia banda à espera

A radiant sun illuminates the already graceful town of Ponte da Penca, which wakes festooned for the most special of all occasions, the biggest day of St. Dicle's feast. Part of the band, who will play following the departure of the solemn procession, is waiting now for the rest of the elements, the musicians from the place located on the opposite bank of the river. Given the traditional rivalry between the people of both margins, it's more than certain that this expectation will result in the most lively maliciousness between the two factions ... Of course, the rivalry is friendly and just an excuse to play so, by the end, the most likely it is that music will come out perfect and all of them will spend a great day of celebration.
