The last dive / O último mergulho

Summer belongs to the past, a new season brings signs of change already visible, starting with the temperatures that will no longer invite for many more baths in the river, as are surely realizing those who stubbornly resist, still not believing in the departure of the sunny days. It will be for sure the last dive of the year. Within weeks, the place itself will be outfitted with the "Fall-Winter collection," which works in Nature as opposed to those that line up in shop windows and soon in our imperfect bodies, because it is in the colder days that trees and vineyards go less clothed ...

I'am also pleased to announce that my exhibition in Marvão will be extended throughout October. Between the 1st and 11th of that month, the same site will also run the Book Fair, and from 1 to 5, the council welcomes the "Al-Mossassa" Islamic festival, so there's no lack of excuses for a visit to this monumental town...

Preparations / Preparativos

By this time of year, as the vine foliage changes its color, its fruit decides to go further and changes its state, from solid to liquid after a transformation process that is the most beautiful and celebrated of all country activities. And if this happens in large vineyards where they end up with thousands of bottles of appreciated content coming out of their cellars, also the most modest of places have its share of alchemy for which the couple in the image seems to get prepared, because the small trellis that covers a street, embraces a field, or just hangs itself on the porch of a house, also gives a fruit that has something to say.

This work was one of those that once the sketch was born, I immediately wanted to move to painting and so, to the distaste of so many older sketches patiently awaiting their turn, I've put this one in front of the “queue” with the greatest effrontery, and it did not take too much to be done, very reasonably matching my expectations. It was just the way I like, when everything goes well and quickly.
The image was not inspired by anything that exists in our geography - at least that I know of - and may gather a few characteristics of different places... It is thus a sort of “imaginarium omelet", and may eventually serve as a tribute to the vernacular architecture, and how harmoniously it always managed to merge into the landscape, enriching it with no harm: A lesson often unlearned. Maybe that explains the proximity of the cliff...

Today's sketch / O esboço do dia - 292

A watercolor that failed: Probably some sketches were born to remain sketches. Despite being tempting, they completely lose their interest when transferred to watercolor. As unfulfilled promises, I was ready to compare these sketches with some politicians, but decided to remain silent because in this case I may have my share of guilt :)))

Small signs / Pequenos sinais

Not long ago, I was complaining about the difficulties with painting sunless days, and then here I find myself around a new one ... And thank goodness: The truth is that these days have a charm of their own, which I want to continue to try to capture in the future. If I remember correctly, it was under such atmosphere that I even made one of my favorites last year...
This time of year is special, and invites to implement all of the written above, given the anticipation of one of the most beautiful changes of the annual cycle. Small signs are already visible: The vines wanting to change color, the first chills inviting the first coats, firewood stacked and its fragrant alchemy that is transmitted through the chimney...

A valley / Um vale

I miss catching the fresh morning air in lush mountain valleys like this one, whose mere contemplation is so refreshing for the eyes and the soul. A time of the year when this show as simple as sublime becomes particularly special is increasingly approaching, as the horizons start acquiring new hues, from which some signs are already visible... It's just the simple and natural course of Nature, more or less changed in more recent times, and that certainly would not lend to these romantic reveries if, rather than a brush, the one who writes them had to hold a hoe such as the one carried by the strong lady...

A farm in the outskirts / Uma quinta dos arrabaldes

A brief foray inspired by "my" outskirts, not far from the coast, where the hills are soft, farmhouses surround themselves by fields of a certain vastness. It is true that today this still largely rural landscape has already its "intruders": Highways, industrial structures, stray city-like buildings among corn fields, undesired patches of eucalyptus, and power lines much less picturesque than the one we see here. Still, it remains a good alternative for a weekend stroll when it's not possible to go further, because still has, for those who seek, a few corners that refer to more bucolic times.

Small town with castle and church / Vila com igreja e castelo

When I posted the sketch for this work, I stated that there was "trouble" on the way, but did not realize how much it was true... I must have a masochistic side, because I get into these works for which I know in advance that will have no patience, and then end up steaming on all sides, for falling back into the same trap sooner or later. So it was once again with this one, started last Tuesday and finished already this morning, with my fuses blown and only willing to come to an end. Moreover, I imagined this scene in a day without sun, an environment in which I do not feel comfortable because the lights and shades are for me like the stars for the navigator; My brushes did not help either, because all of them have gone beyond the limits of usability ...
But enough lamentation. It's done. I can not tell if I like, maybe in a month I'll do, now simply cannot see it in front of me. I'll take a walk, do anything except painting in the remainder Sunday, in the certainty that the next work be more relaxed ...

Almost hits grandpa / Quase atropela o avô

I do not know why this agile kid goes up the stairs in a glance, almost trampling the moment of rest of the unprepared elder man. For me, he must have done "something" nearby, and comes to hide in any corner of the grandparent's old house where he may be spending a few days. Maybe soor maybe not, or maybe any other of many assumptions: Painting a watercolor and then not knowing what to write about it could only end in this sterile “chewing” of words with the sole purpose of garnishing the image with a few lines of text... Laziness or a lack of imagination? Maybe one, maybe the other.

Two houses and a cow / Duas casas e uma vaca

To be exact, the title of this work should be "Two houses, two cats, a gate, a vine, a cow and its prospective owner," but there's nothing like keeping things simple... As simple as this corner in a village, and if there's something that village streets have, it's these anonymous corners, discrete but full of charm and interest. I have not visited villages for a while, and look forward to Fall, when the landscape around them - or what might have survived this year's hellish fires - becomes less dry, and acquires new and beautiful colors, so I can resume my visits and thus "recharge" my visual memory that I feel it's becoming more tenuous...

The old manor / O velho solar

The old and well maintained manor house stands out in its sun-beaten whiteness in a colorful and verdant hillside of Minho. Nothing to distract the two neighbors from their conversation, as this is for them a vision they are used since ever. Other issues of great importance are discussed, such as harvesting the beans, the sowing of next year's broad beans, the corn that dries already in the floor, and especially the anticipation of the grape harvest that is not far. And about the four-legged neighbors, what will be subject discussed by their noses?
