It's one of my favorite towns. I especially like to visit it on a Sunday morning, when the riverfront is cheerfully bursting with people and there's always an event or a market. Add to this the old houses, the monuments and the abundance of gardens and landscaped corners, and we shall have medicine to cheer up the most depressed of visitors at any time of the year!
Haven't gone there for a while, and this time stayed less than usual, as I wanted to use my break to visit a few more places, but did'n miss the chance to look for a subject to practice a bit more of observation drawing. Among many to choose from, which could last for many days, I decided myself for this simple corner I appreciate since ever, and so there I stayed, entertaining myself for some 45 minutes, surrounded by a small and interested crowd of young spectators.
I felt a great satisfaction at the end, not so much for the drawing itself, but especially for the pleasure of having been there working on it. A huge difference from the discomfort of my still recent first attempts...

I started a post from last August writing that “I'm not an experimentalist by nature”. Since then, my feeling is that I've done nothing but experiences. It's been pencil lately... I'm not a coherent by nature.

Rustic doors in a fading pale blue are something of an old obsession... Maybe due to the influence of a house that really existed, about which I wrote some time ago a post that I decided to revisit and update these days.

Desenhando por Braga / Sketching around in Braga

Not being the place where I live, it is in Braga that I spend most of my time. For that reason, it is the city I increasingly call “home”, something that isn't more than a natural strengthening of an old connection, since I always had strong family ties there.
Whenever it's possible, I never dispense a short after-lunch walk by its lively downtown streets, where there is never lack of interesting things to see. More recently, I've been taking this little piece of day to practice observation sketching.

Being short of time, I try to optimize it for a fast and agile work, reducing my sketching tools to a minimum: An A5 sketchbook, a non-waterproof pen, a pair of colored watercolor pencils and a waterbrush. Standing, seated, in a cafe or even inside my car, I try to work fast and not thinking too much, not taking longer than fifteen to twenty minutes in each attempt.
The result is for me quite strange, a style completely different from my usual works and in which I don't recognise myself, but that I find more amusing than annoying. Time and practice, as well as new tools to try in the future, will expectably improve this new variant from my usual work, another complement of the imaginary landscapes, for which not every day there are ideas or inspiration.
