Casas / Houses

São Mamede de Infesta is a city in the outskirts of Porto.
There are many houses there. At the end of the day, they still tend to be there.

I was looking for some change, and this sketch was an excuse for a long desired experience: Using two colors only, a cold and a warm one. I enjoyed, and since then I've been recurring with an immeasurable frequency.

One of those roadside views that sooner or later would end up in the sketchbook. I like the way the tower of the parish church appears from behind the farmhouse, as if making part of it. The house is indeed very interesting, and seems to ask for its own sketch one of these days!

Porto: Aliados

Quick and loose, a simple late afternoon sketch.

Inacabado / Unfinished

Not having time to finish the sketch of a car repair shop can be good news if it's you own car that is being checked...
I was tempted to complete the work later, taking advantage of the visual memory still fresh, but then I thought in this case the story would be better told through unachievement.

Porto: Trindade

I happen to come to Porto more often than usual these days. And as soon as I get dispatched from whatever brought me there, some little time is always found for a couple of sketchies.

Rua triste? / Sad street?

A few years ago I used to avoid this street because I found it too cold and dull, with its long wall and the monotonous row of buildings all similar...
Now here I am sketching it. Must be one of those things that happens as we grow old.

Fim de rua / End of street

I don't know how that “thing” went up there, but it's not the first time that, amongst sketchers conversations, one hears about strange sightings in the skies of sketches...

Caminho rural em Gilbarbedo / Rural path in Gilbarbedo

I came to this tiny village in Terras de Bouro with the purpose of sketching a windmill that exists there, and was already on my way following an indicated path. But when passing by this site, I found the composition so interesting that couldn't resist.
It was a site so pleasant and quiet that, after one hour of total sketching abstraction, the appetizer had become the main course, and the windmill had to be left for another day.

Visualmente silencioso / Visually silent

And amongst the typical hustle and bustle of a Ponte de Lima Sunday, a corner of great serenity to which it would be impossible to resist.

Palacete / Mansion

It's quite an old mansion. There are even those who say it's been here since the day it was built.

A ponte, o rio, a lenda / The bridge, the river, the legend

Gorgeous morning at Ponte de Lima, a corner with wide views, free time and the ideal mood: Conditions fullfilled for my very first experience on a double page sketch.
The work was pleasantly fun and the result can be said satisfactory. I feel sorry, however, that my unexperience in double page compositions, as well as my lousy scanning skills caused the central element, the equestrian statue of the Roman general Decimus Junius Brutus, to almost disappear between the sketchbook's “tectonic plates”...

Here it is then, a more detailed view of the general that crossed the river to call by their names, one by one, all his terrified legionaires in the opposite bank, in order to proof them that they weren't standing before the Lethes, the mytical river of oblivion. There is no tourist that doesn't want to be pictured in front of this statue, preferably perched in one of the unflappable equine's forelegs, as confirmed by this trio from Brazil.
